My name is Caroline Hanson and I am a Senior at the University School of Milwaukee. I grew up in Fox Point, Wisconsin, a suburban village in Milwaukee County. My father has been a practicing lawyer at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren for the past 25 years and is a great source of inspiration when it comes to my passion for social justice. During my elementary and middle school experience, I attended a public school in my area. Even from a young age, I noticed how drastically different my experience with living in Milwaukee was from some of my classmates who lived further in the city. While I by no means think that everyone should have the same experience with or perspective of the world around them, I do think it is important that everyone is treated with fairness and kindness. Most children are often told that "life isn't fair." To me, this means that there are things beyond our control, and bad things can happen to good people. This adage does not mean however, that we should back down in the face of injustice and chalk it up to life just being life. Whenever possible, we should make the world a more just place in an effort to combat the unfairness which we cannot control. I hope through this journey and beyond I can apply this notion and shed light on the everyday injustice under our jurisdiction to aid.
